Chemical Synthesis of Multifunctional Air Pollutants: Terpene-Derived Nitrooxy Organosulfates

Nitrooxy organosulfates derived from terpenes (NOSTP) represent an important class of products formed between anthropogenic pollution (e.g., SO2 and NOx) natural emissions. NOSTP compounds have been consistently detected in atmospheric environments under varying urban influences. Their chemical linkages to both anthroposphere biosphere make them valuable markers for tracking anthroposphere–biosphere interactions. However, their quantification, formation, transformation kinetics aerosols are hindered due the lack standards. In this work, we developed two routes first concise synthesis eight including α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, limonaketone, β-caryophyllene. Subsequently, six synthesized were time positively identified ambient aerosol samples, clarifying certain misidentifications previous studies. More significantly, availability authentic standards allows irrefutable observation three carbon skeleton-rearranged NOSTP, one β-caryophyllene, revealing occurrence previously unrecognized pathways formation NOSTP. Two β-pinene limonene could not be detected, likely rapid hydrolysis immediate hydroxynitrate precursors outcompeting sulfation. Such mechanistic evidence is understanding chemistry related compounds. This work demonstrates usefulness probing mechanisms atmosphere.
